Cancel a Pôle emploi Appointment: Stress-Free Steps to Follow

You receive a notice from France Travail, and on that very day, a job interview is scheduled for the same time. Or perhaps there’s a medical emergency, a child…

You receive a France Travail appointment notice, and an interview happens to be scheduled for the exact same time. Or perhaps you have a medical emergency, a sick child, or a trip required for a training course. The good news is that you can cancel a Pôle emploi appointment without putting your registration at risk, as long as you do it properly and on time.

What actually happens when you miss a France Travail appointment

Before discussing cancellations, it’s important to understand what you risk if you don’t notify them that you’ll be absent. Since June 1, 2025, the sanctions system has followed a graduated response rather than automatic deregistration. If you miss an appointment without giving notice, you’ll first receive a notification giving you time to submit your comments. To understand the process, it’s helpful to know how to cancel a Pôle emploi appointment properly.

This gives you time to provide supporting documents or explain your situation. If your response is considered insufficient, or you don’t respond, the consequences can range from a warning to a temporary suspension of benefits. Immediate deregistration remains a last resort, reserved for repeated breaches.

For RSA recipients registered with France Travail under the Full Employment Act, the situation is slightly different: sanctions may be decided by the departmental council, not just France Travail. Deadlines and points of contact may therefore vary.

Cancel a Pôle emploi appointment through your online account

The quickest way is through the Mon Espace website or mobile app. Here’s how:

  • Sign in to your personal account at francetravail.fr or through the Mon Espace mobile app, then go to the “Mes échanges et documents” tab and click “Mes rendez-vous”.
  • Select the appointment and choose the option to reschedule or cancel. If you’d rather reschedule than cancel, the system will show available time slots.
  • Confirm the cancellation or new time slot. You’ll receive a confirmation email so you have a written record of your request.

Not all appointments can be changed online. Some appointment notices, particularly those related to a job-search review, can only be canceled by contacting your adviser directly. If you don’t see a cancellation option in the interface, you’ll need to pick up the phone.

Cancel by phone or email

Call 3949 to let them know you can’t attend the appointment. The call is logged, giving you proof if the matter is disputed later. You can also send a message through the secure messaging service in your personal account, stating the appointment date and reason and, if possible, attaching supporting documents.

Make this a habit: always keep a written record of your cancellation request. Take a screenshot of the online confirmation, save a copy of the email you sent, or note the phone number you called along with the date and time. If there’s a dispute, this evidence can make all the difference.

Accepted reasons for canceling and how much notice to give

France Travail distinguishes between legitimate reasons and absences for convenience. A job interview, illness, hospitalization, exam, or court summons is generally considered a valid reason. Attending a training course, an urgent medical appointment, or having to look after a child unexpectedly also falls into this category.

By contrast, a simple oversight or a personal commitment without supporting documents can be harder to justify. There’s no single rule setting the cancellation deadline: it varies depending on the type of appointment and the office concerned. In practice, giving notice as early as possible is the best way to protect your situation.

The commitment agreement

For people who have signed a commitment agreement with France Travail, missing an appointment may be assessed in light of the commitments set out in that agreement. The issue then goes beyond simply managing a time slot: a missed appointment may be seen as a failure to follow the action plan agreed with your adviser.

It is possible to put things right. If you missed an appointment and couldn’t give notice in time, responding to the notification letter is your top priority. This letter gives you time to submit your comments and prevent the process from resulting in a sanction.

France Travail sanctions: what changed in 2025

The system in place since June 2025 is based on a graduated approach. A first, isolated breach does not result in deregistration. The adversarial process requires France Travail to inform the person before making any decision and give them time to respond.

Possible sanctions range from a partial reduction in benefits for a short period to temporary deregistration in the most serious or repeated cases. The amount and duration depend on the nature of the breach and the jobseeker’s history.

One point that’s often overlooked: you have the right to challenge a sanction. If you believe a decision is unjustified, you can contact the France Travail ombudsman or file an administrative appeal. Keeping all supporting documents (medical certificates, job interview invitations, training certificates) can significantly strengthen your case.

Canceling a France Travail appointment is nothing to worry about if you handle it in advance. Give notice early, keep proof, and provide supporting documents as soon as possible: these three simple steps are enough to avoid most sanctions. The current system allows you to put things right, as long as you don’t let the matter go unanswered.
